The News Wire

April 30, 2007

While I was away getting my degree, the world did not stop turning surprisingly. Here are some interesting articles, videos, and other links about the goings on around the globe since I have last posted. Riveting topics include bees, roaches, skunks, and an ostrich with his head in the sand.

–First up, SAVE THE BEES. They are dissapearing in massive quantities all over the world and no one knows why. This isn’t your ordinary “Save the [insert cute animal here]” campaign either. Bees are gone, there’s nothing to pollinate all of America’s crops, so this means we will potentially not be getting fruits or vegetables this fall. So stock up or else you could find yourself with a nasty case of scurvy by mid winter. On the plus side if they are really gone, at least no one will have to experience the annoying sensation of a bee sting this summer.

Bill Maher has an interesting take here.

Incredible interview with the former Director of the CIA George Tenet on 60 minutes last night. He gets very animated throughout the preceding. He moves around all the time, arms all flailing and points and stares at Scott Pelley continually. He is visibly annoyed with the tough lines of questioning and raises his voice to a semi-scream throughout. Yet, he still makes the case as to why he is not solely to blame for the intelligence failure in Iraq. The real direction everyone should be looking at is (surprise, surprise): The White House. With that said, he comes off looking like something between pit bull who has been harassed by the cat gang a few too many times while chained up and a complete, raving lunatic. I’m still guessing he shouldn’t have got the Medal of Freedom.

George Bush dancing on Malaria Day–The dance itself is hilarious but the kicker is at the end at when the guy on the bongos becomes the first person in recorded history to give the president daps. High comedy.

Strange, Bush is fidgety and uncomfortable when being questioned by reporters, but when he’s on stage for a ceremony, even an African dance, it seems like there’s no place he’d rather be. Reminds me of the Daily Show clip where he continuously talks about doing business over “dinner” where he, of course, gets the distinct honor “slicing the pig.” Meanwhile serious questions loom, but that’s all he’s worried about. He’s hilarious. Too bad he’s still leader of the free world.

–Unless you’ve been living in a hole and only get your news from this blog site, (and judging by the lack of comments, you do not) radio host Don Imus got fired for calling the Rutger’s women’s basketball team a bunch of “nappy haired hos.” Some people have called his firing unjust and said his slip of the tongue was an overblown mistake. Ok, sure. But are these overblown mistakes too? The ever useful wikiquote details an extensive list racist comments Dom Imus has spouted over the years, including refering the former NY Knicks center Patrick Ewing as “Mighty Joe Young” and the rest of the Knicks as “crackheads.” All in the name of “comedy” of course.

–Tom Friedman of the NYT can be hit or miss or really miss but in this, he hits a home run. Everyone knows global warming is an enviromental crisis, but it is also may be the political and economic key to this country’s future standing with the rest of the world.

First Democratic debate–Fairly boring. One heated exchange, a bunch of soundbites. Hillary was classic Hillary–prepared, coherent, middle of the road, pretty boring. the same can not be said for this guy: Former Alaskan Senator Mike Gravel

Barak Obama was a little disapointing, if only because expectations are so high. He wandered a bit on the questions. He’ll figure it out and we will see where he is in six months. He still has an early money advantage, waves of support flowing in, and no reason for it to stop. He is still the best candidate by far, though Clinton certainly shows why she will be tough to beat.

It also should be noted John Edwards got ripped off on his $400 haircut. I’d be pissed if I paid 25 bucks for that.
