Super Tuesday: Everybody Wins! (Except Mitt Romney)

Feb. 6, 2008

Most of the major candidates in both parties came out of Super Tuesday with the ability to claim some sort of victory.

For the Democrats, Hillary Clinton won the two biggest states, California and New York, as well as the overall popular vote (although it was by a single percentage point). Barack Obama took claim to the most states won overall with 13 going his way. The Obama camp also staked it won more delegates, but again, the margins are so close the only real victory is momentum for his campaign, which two weeks ago faced 20 point deficits in the polls in a majority of the states in play.

On the Republican side, John McCain came out of the 24 state Super Primary the clear victor, winning a majority of the states, all but assuring him the Republican nomination. Mike Huckabee did better than expected with five state wins, and in some respects, took over the number one contender role from Mitt Romney. Romney could only muster four wins, two of which were his home state of Utah, and Massachusetts where he served as governor. He also got trounced in California where he was expecting to win.

Finally, Ron Paul did not garner any wins last night, but he remains a winner for being the only man with actual principles and common sense in the Republican Party.
